Ambassador (Dr.) Rufus OloruntoyinAkeju hails from Lagos Island, Lagos State. He was born on 25th May, 1947.

He had his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkley, USA and his Masters of Arts in International Affairs in June, 1973 from Ohio University, Athens and proceeded to Howard University, Washington DC, USA same year to bag his PHD in Political Science in 1977.

Ambassador Rufus Akeju attended so many courses from where he bagged the following certificates;

  • Certificate on United Nations and its Agencies in 1977
  • Certificate of proficiency in French and Spanish languages in 1983 and 1997 respectively
  • Certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) from Kennesaw State University Centre for Conflict Management, Atlanta, Georgia, USA in 2014.

Ambassador Akeju started his working career as an Assistant Professor at the Tennesse State University, Nashville, USA. He returned to Nigeria and joined the services of the then University of Sokoto now Usman Dan Fodio University as Lecturer 1 in 1980. He rose to the rank of a Senior Lecturer in 1982 and later transferred his services to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1984 where he became an Assistant Director and became Minister Counsellor, Inter African Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.

In 1994, he was promoted to a Deputy Director and became a Director in 2003.

Ambassador Akeju retired in 2007 as an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Havana, Cuba with concurrent accreditation to the Bahamas, Nicaragua and Honduras.

He represented Nigeria in various International engagements including the United Nations (UN), Organization of African Unity (OAU) and Non-Aligned Countries Conferences.

Ambassador (Dr.) Rufus Akeju’s first appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), INEC was on 22nd July, 2010, a position he held till 2015.

He has many publications to his credit and member of several Professional Bodies including;

  • American Society of International Law
  • Nigerian Institute of International Affairs
  • American Academy of Political Science
  • National Political Science Honour Society among others

Ambassador Akeju is married with children.

He is the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ondo State.
